Two things set Kartalkaya apart: how much snow it gets, and its tree runs. Moist air arriving from the Black Sea hits the Bolu range and leaves an average base of two to three metres a season. Because most pistes are cut through fir forest, the wind drops and visibility usually holds even on stormy days.

Kartalkaya divides into two hotel sectors, Kartal and Dorukkaya. Each has its own chairlifts and drag lifts, linked at the top by connecting runs. Of the 22 pistes, roughly a third are graded for beginners and half for intermediates.
The best-known descent is the long blue run that winds through the forest for about 2.5 kilometres. The snowpark built for snowboarders stays in place all season.

From Istanbul the TEM motorway reaches Bolu in about 2.5 hours; the final 38 km of mountain road then takes anywhere between 50 minutes and 1.5 hours depending on conditions. That last stretch is steep and twisting — winter tyres are mandatory and chains are needed in heavy snow.
If you would rather not drive, hotels run transfers from Bolu bus station. Coming from Ankara, the route via Gerede is the shortest.
Accommodation at Kartalkaya is almost entirely on-mountain hotels; there is no village or town at the resort. That means you can ski from your door to the lift, but it also means your evenings are limited to the hotel.
Most hotels run on an all-inclusive basis and sell ski packages. Midweek rates are markedly lower than weekends — if your dates are flexible, Tuesday to Thursday is both cheaper and far quieter on the slopes.
The season opens in mid-December and lasts to the end of March. The heaviest snowfall comes in January, while February holds the deepest base. In March the afternoon sun softens the snow, so mornings are the better bet.
Snow at Kartalkaya is wetter and softer than at Erciyes or Palandöken. That means falls hurt less — one of the reasons beginners tend to like it here.
In normal conditions the whole journey takes about 3.5 hours: 2.5 hours on the motorway to Bolu, then roughly an hour on the mountain road. In snowfall it can stretch to five hours.

Erciyes Ski Resort spreads across the northern and western flanks of the 3,917 m Mount Erciyes and, with 112 kilometres of marked runs, is the largest ski area in Turkey. Its 34 pistes — reached from the Hisarcık, Tekir and Develi gates — cover everything from wide blue slopes where a child can take a first lesson to demanding black descents that start at 3,400 m.
Uludağ is the first name that comes to mind when Turks talk about skiing. Its 24 pistes and 30 kilometres of terrain run from the hotel zone at 1,750 m to a 2,543 m summit, and it is the only major resort a skier can reach from Istanbul in half a day.
Palandöken Ski Resort runs from 2,200 m to 3,176 m, making it both the highest resort in Turkey and the one with the longest season. It can open in November and stay open into May — effectively the only place in the country for spring skiing.
Sarıkamış Ski Resort lies 55 km south-west of Kars, set between 2,100 and 2,634 m in Scots pine forest. Its international reputation rests on "crystal snow": in this exceptionally dry climate, snowflakes reach the ground with their crystal structure intact.
