Why learn to snowboard at Kartalkaya?
The first two days of learning to snowboard are largely spent falling, which makes snow hardness a direct factor in how the experience feels. Kartalkaya's damp, soft snow delivers a fraction of the impact you would take on a hard, icy piste.
The second factor is width. The broad blue runs in the Kartal sector leave enough room to practise side slipping and your first linked turns. Trying to learn on a narrow, busy piste is risky for you and for everyone around you.
The third is distance: 3.5 hours from Istanbul. That makes it realistic to come three weekends in a row and move forward each time — and repetition without long gaps is by far the most effective way to learn.
Protection: what to rent and why
Wrists are the most commonly injured area in snowboarding. Throwing your hands out as you fall is reflexive, and your whole body weight lands on them. Wrist guards cut that risk substantially and cost 80 TL a day.
Next comes the tailbone. Falling backwards is unavoidable on a board, and padded impact shorts are the most valuable item you can add in your first days. A helmet is the one piece we treat as mandatory regardless of level.
Riding the tree runs
Kartalkaya's runs through the fir forest are valuable precisely because they hold visibility on stormy days. But they are narrow and winding, and a long freeride board feels cumbersome in them.
For the tree sections, ask for a short to mid-flex all-mountain board. Being able to turn quickly is a direct part of staying safe in a narrow corridor. On foggy days, also use yellow or orange lenses — they lift the contrast noticeably.
Board care and speed in damp snow
Snow at Kartalkaya is wetter than at Erciyes or Palandöken. For a snowboarder the most concrete consequence is speed: damp snow sticks to an unwaxed base and stops the board on the flats.
So the boards we send to Kartalkaya are waxed more frequently during the season, with a wax suited to wet snow, and every base is checked before handover.
There is something you can do too: at a break, stand the board on edge rather than leaving it face-down on the snow. A base warmed in the sun develops a thin film of water, and the first few metres afterwards feel sticky.
Night riding: Kartalkaya's underrated advantage
The floodlit run in the Dorukkaya sector opens on selected evenings through the season. For snowboarding, night riding has a practical benefit: the piste is empty and you can repeat things without worrying about falling.
That matters for beginners. Falling repeatedly on a crowded daytime piste is tiring and self-conscious; repeating the same movement ten times on an empty night run speeds up learning noticeably.
Lens choice becomes critical at night: use a clear or yellow lens. A dark mirrored lens is useless under floodlights and hides the bumps entirely. Tell us on the request form that you plan to ride at night and we send the right lens.
A day rental does not end at dusk — you return the gear the next morning and there is no surcharge for night riding.
