Choosing a board for wet snow

The snow at Uludağ is heavy because of the humid Marmara air. For a snowboarder that has two consequences: the board runs slower, and the powder advantage largely disappears.

In those conditions a waxed base is the single biggest factor. Wet snow sticks to an unwaxed base and stops you dead on the flats. Boards we send to Uludağ are therefore prepared with a hot wax suited to damp snow.

For board type, all-mountain is the most balanced choice. There is limited open powder here that would justify a long freeride board, while the pistes are well groomed — and a mid-flex board performs best on that surface.

The best runs for snowboarding at Uludağ

The wide blue runs just above the hotel zone are the best terrain for learning and linking your first turns. The gradient is moderate and the width leaves room for mistakes.

For advanced riders the red runs served by the summit chairlift are the better option — but the summit area is exposed and fog is common, so judge visibility before heading up.

The most common frustration for snowboarders at Uludağ is the flat connecting traverses. Crossing flat ground on a board is harder than on skis; carry your speed into them and plan a route that avoids them where you can.

Season and snow conditions

The Uludağ season opens in mid-December and closes at the end of March. For snowboarding the best month is January, when the snow is at its coldest and driest.

By March the snow softens quickly after midday. In that period being on the hill between 08:30 and noon is worth more than the whole rest of the day.

Preparing a board for Uludağ's damp snow

Uludağ's snow is heavy because of the damp Marmara air, and that shows up directly on the base of your board. In wet snow a thin film of water forms between base and snow; an unwaxed base sticks to that film and slows you down.

So boards we send to Uludağ are prepared with a hot wax suited to wet snow, and long rentals get an interim wax during the season. As long as you rent from us, it is not something you have to think about.

If you own a board and are heading to Uludağ, get it waxed before you travel. The difference is most obvious on the flat sections of the return runs to the hotel zone.

Riding on foggy days: visibility and route choice

Uludağ is the foggiest resort in Turkey, and snowboarders feel it more than skiers. The reason is simple: riding on a single edge, an unexpected bump upsets your balance faster than it would on skis.

Rule one on a foggy day is to change the lens. Yellow or orange raises contrast and makes the gradient visible; with a dark mirrored lens you will see nothing at all.

Rule two is route choice. The summit is open and exposed; when the fog thickens, drop below the treeline. Trees give you a visual reference and cut the wind.

Rule three is speed. With visibility under 50 metres, do not ride faster than you can stop — that is the second FIS rule, and the most broken one in fog.
