What Is a DIN Setting and Why It Matters More Than You Think
The binding has one job: to let go at the right moment. The DIN setting decides when that is — and getting it wrong is how knee injuries happen.
The least discussed piece of ski equipment is the binding, and it is the one that matters most for your safety. Its only job is to release the ski at the right moment.
That moment is defined by an international scale called DIN. Set it too low and the binding releases while you are simply skiing. Set it too high and it does not release in a fall — and all that force goes into your knee.
This guide explains how DIN is calculated, why we ask for the information we do, and what to check when the equipment is handed over.
What DIN actually measures
The DIN scale (from Deutsches Institut für Normung) standardises the torque required for a binding to release the boot. It typically runs from 0.75 to 18.
A child might be set at DIN 2–3, an average adult at 5–8, and a heavy advanced skier at 9–12. Racers can go above 14.
The important point is that the number is not arbitrary. It comes from a table based on height, weight, boot sole length, age and skiing ability.
The five inputs
Weight and height determine the forces acting on your body. Boot sole length sets the lever arm — two skiers of identical weight but different foot size get different DIN values.
Age is a correction factor: values are reduced for skiers over 50 and under 10, because bone strength differs.
The final input is ability. Advanced skiers use higher settings, because a binding releasing unexpectedly during aggressive skiing is itself dangerous. Overstating your level, however, directly undermines the safety this system provides.

The risk runs both ways
Set too high, the binding does not release in a fall. The ski keeps rotating while your leg cannot, and the force concentrates in the knee. A significant share of anterior cruciate ligament injuries in skiing happen exactly this way.
Set too low, the binding releases during normal skiing, particularly in hard turns. That means an uncontrolled fall at speed, which is dangerous in its own right.
The correct value between those two extremes only exists if the five inputs are accurate. That is why the details you give when renting are not a formality.
What to check at handover
Ask to see the binding set in front of you. When it is done you can read the DIN value in a small window on the binding — front and rear should match.
Step into and out of the binding once. The boot should seat easily and, once locked, should not move.
Do not share equipment mid-trip. A person of different weight skiing on your setting is not protected by it.

Binding types and when each is used
Ski bindings come in more variety than most people realise, and knowing the type helps you use the equipment correctly.
Alpine bindings are the standard: the boot is held at both toe and heel and the heel does not lift. This is the normal solution for piste skiing and covers virtually all rental equipment.
Touring bindings free the heel so you can walk uphill, then lock it for the descent. They are not used on-piste and require a different boot type.
System (integrated) bindings are supplied with the ski and slide on a rail, which allows quick adjustment for different boot lengths. That is exactly why rental fleets favour them.
You do not need to ask which type you are getting — for piste use we choose the right one. But if you are buying your own equipment, this distinction directly shapes the decision.
What gets checked on a binding
The binding is the least-maintained piece of ski equipment and the one whose failure matters most. When you rent, that maintenance is ours — but it is worth knowing what is involved.
Springs fatigue over time. A binding whose indicator reads 7 does not necessarily release at 7; only a calibrated test machine confirms that. Bindings in our inventory are machine-tested once a year — something not every rental operation in Turkey does.
Cleanliness matters second. Snow and ice packed onto the binding's boot contact surfaces change how it releases. That is why you clear the snow off your boot sole before stepping in; tapping the boot with a pole is the standard move.
Third is boot sole wear. The plastic on a ski boot sole wears down over time and degrades how the binding grips it. Boots with heavily worn soles are pulled from the fleet.
